Andrew Yang Wants New Casino On Governors Island in New York Harbor
New York is looking for ways to boost its economy which has taken a massive blow due to the covid-19 pandemic. The state budget like the economy could do with an influx of cash and state legislators are looking for new ways to make this happen.
Manhattan or Governors Island
High on the list of most state legislators is the idea to develop a new casino resort. A number of state legislators are calling for a new casino to be developed in Manhattan. However, senators like Brad Holyman and Joseph Addabbo disagree with this idea. Holyman says that given the current problems with affordable and support accommodation in Manhattan, building a casino resort will cause more problems.
Addabbo is also against the idea as he believes a casino should be developed in a location that needs a financial facelift. Manhattan is the most popular place in New York and does not warrant a casino resort.
Former Democratic Presidential Andrew Yang is pushing for the casino to be built in Governor’s Island in New York Harbour. Yang is currently campaigning to be the next Mayor of New York and is simultaneously pushing for a new casino.
Governor’s Island Casino Is Perfect
Yang said that it made perfect sense to develop a multi-million dollar casino on Governor’s Island which spans 172 acres. He claims that it would be perfect as it would generate more tourism for the Island and also generate millions of dollars in gross revenue.

While Yang is pushing for a casino on Governor’s Island, it will be interesting to see how many casino developers are interested in the idea as the location may not interest them. Governor’s Island does not have a lot of commercial activity and can only be reached via a ferry. Most of the activity on the island revolves around the state park and the national monument.
Some senators have questioned Andrew Yang and his proposal for a casino on Governor’s Island. They point out that the federal government and New York City signed an agreement in 2003 that that bans casinos on the island. Governor’s Island is also one of the few green spaces available in New York and the locals like visiting the island to relax and enjoy nature.
The push to develop a casino on Governor’s Island could upset locals and turn into a protest, something that a casino developer would like to avoid. We will have to wait and see if Andrew Yang becomes the next Mayor of New York and if he will get his wish to develop a casino on Governor’s Island.
