One year after UIGEA was approved in the US, online gambling companies are shifting their operations and efforts toward Europe. In fact it is a reasonable approach since EU is going a very different route than US, and there are many market opportunities being opened.
Something is really going on in Malta regarding online gambling. After the new amendments to the UK Gambling Act 2005 were introduced on September 1st, there is a large number of gambling license applications entering this small and beautiful island. Malta can become one of the most important gambling centers in the World.

After UIGEA introduction last October, several European gambling operators were forced to quit the profitable US gambling market. UIGEA was ruled unlawful by WTO and EU now seeks compensation.

The European Union is finally taking some action against countries that are trying to ban online gambling. Last Friday, EU Industry Commissioner Guenter Verheugen wrote to German regional state governments giving them a month to change a draft treaty on the issue, in which they are trying to ban online gambling.

Following UK approach to online gambling, Italy and Spain passed legislation to liberalize internet betting. Some European Governments start to create a legal environment for online gambling instead of banning it.
